2005 College Basketball Pre-Season Rankings
July 21, 2005
by Tim Adams
With the 2005 NBA draft behind us, we can now look ahead to men's college basketball and which players are going to be back with their campus teammates for the 2005-2006 season.
1. Duke
Coach K has two potential first team All Americans in Reddick and Williams, and yet another top flight recruiting class coming in. The big question is who will replace Daniel Ewing at the point guard spot. Sean Dockery's time in the spotlight has come, unless one of the young guys prove more capable at the point. Freshmen Paulus and McRoberts could contribute big numbers right off the bat. Reddick of course, will hit a few threes and Williams will grab a few boards. This will be the best team in the best conference but all in all Duke will prove too much for anybody in the ACC and in fact the nation.

| Key returning players | J.J. Reddick 21.8 ppg
Shelden Williams 15.5 ppg 11.2 rpg

2. Villanova
The Wildcats return their entire starting line up as well as their top nine scorers. Nova lost to national champs North Carolina by only one point in the NCAA tourney, proving that they will be a team to be reckoned with in 05'-06'. Allan Ray and Randy Foe are an explosive high scoring guard tandem, while Curtis Sumpter is an effective combo forward. Nova should be at the top of the heap in a tough Big East conference.
|
| Key returning players | Allan Ray 16.2 ppg
Randy Foe 15.5 ppg 5 rpg
Curtis Sumpter 15.3 ppg 7.2 rpg
Mike Nardi 8.2 ppg
Kyle Lowry 7.5 ppg

Will Sheridan 5.1 ppg |
| Key additions | none |

3. Arizona
Arizona returns three starters from their Elite Eight team and will fill in the loss of Channing Frye and Salim Stoudamire with some young talented players. Hassan Adams, Ivan Radenovic and Mustafa Shakur will provide the veteran leadership for this team. Jawann McClellan could move into the 2 spot and increase his scoring output significantly. J.P. Prince could spell Shakur at the point, while Marcus Wiliams and Fendi Onobun will provide help at the forward spot. The question with this team is where will the rebounding and interior toughness come from. Despite that somewhat glaring flaw there is still an abundance of talent on this team.

4. Connecticut
| UConn should battle Villanova for supremacy in the Big East, and like Nova will return a lot of production from last year. Josh Boone is a very solid collegiate post man and Rashad Anderson is a solid wing player. Rudy Gay could really break out in his sophomore season. 5. Gonzaga
| Adam Morrison should be one of the top players in all college ball. He seems to just score at will. Derek Raivio is an improving point and should be solid from the outset this year. JP Batista is a load down low and will see more time with the loss of Ronny Turiaff. It will be yet another West Coast Conference title and NCAA tourney appearance for this (cinderella?) team. |

John Calipari has done a good job getting Memphis back on track despite losing talent early to the NBA seemingly year in year out. This time Calipari should finally have a team with no early defections. Rodney Carney and Darius Washington Jr. should provide the leadership and scoring for this club.
